Green Gas Ecotricity Tariff

Ecotricity was the first renewable energy supplier in the UK and is a relatively small company, certainly compared to the giants in the market.

It has three tariffs at the time of writing, two electricity and one gas. The gas one is called Green Gas.

Their website says that they are turning gas bills into gasmills. What this means is that they are creating gas in a green way. But seeing how to make gas green is less clear than with regard to electricity that we all understand can come from wind power or solar power, for instance.

With gas, the process is that organic waste is taken to something called a green gas mill where certain cultures of bacteria break down the waste and create gas in the process, called green gas to distinguish it from the fact it is not from the traditional fossil fuel source.

It is not clear from the website whether the gas you get will actually come from the sources right now or whether the money will go towards building the green gas mills, but the site does say the gas won't be 100% from renewable sources presently so it looks like a combination of the two.

Of course technological innovations are being made all the time and there is a lot of concerted effort by scientists around the world at the moment with regard to developing new green technologies and sourcing and discovering bacteria that work in the required conditions to create products like methane from waste products and so forth.

Therefore it would seem likely that the possibilities of creating green gas in a cost effective way will increase in the future as new products and technologies come online to make this possible.
